Some computers also support booting over a network with a PXE (preboot execution environment). For example, if the USB device is listed in your BIOS boot sequence, you can boot from a bootable USB flash drive in a computer without a hard drive.Įxamples of bootable flash drives include a Microsoft Windows installation disk, GParted Live, Ubuntu Live, or UBCD. Depending on how the BIOS is configured, other bootable devices in the boot sequence are also checked for the necessary boot files. Without a hard drive, a computer can turn on and POST. Can a computer work without a hard drive? Computers used today that don't have a hard drive are known as diskless workstations and are often found in work environments. However, today almost all computers have a hard drive or a storage device that acts as a hard drive. In the past, earlier computers didn't have a hard drive because they were not yet invented or too expensive. When downloading files to your computer, they are permanently stored on your hard drive or another storage medium until they are moved or uninstalled. The storage device provides the storage medium where the operating system is installed and stored.Ī hard drive is also required for the installation of any programs or other files you want to keep on your computer. To install a computer operating system, a hard drive (or another storage device) is required. The operating system interprets keyboard and mouse movements and allows for the use of software, like an Internet browser, word processor, and video games.

One thought I had was if boinc could read from one disk and write to another to maybe speed things up, this could reduce the constant reading and writing on just one disk. I take my hat off to all you Tweakers, Scientists, Admins, and CA's, you've made WCG is very nice BOINC project to crunch. ) If it were not for threads like this, crunchers taking time out to tweak settings, try new devices, report faults and the like, then, I'm absolutely sure that WCG would not run as smoothly as it does. I would think that until the BOINC software is more "intelligent" about its host and available resources, then WCG probably are wise to keep this as an op-in. I would take a guess that 98% of crunchers just go with default values and crunch away quite happily. I had no idea if my bandwidth service would be up to the task, so one Sunday I devoted 15 minutes to looking at this WCG Project, setting it up and it all appeared to work. In that sense I think WCG is correct to have this as an "opt in", if only for the bandwidth requirement. I have no time to be tweaking PC's to the the nth degree to get better efficiency, more points per WU, restarting/removing stuck WU's or whatever. I checked back after 7 days to ensure everything was OK. Interesting David_L6 : I too had great reservations about running this project, (see ) but have opted-in (clicked the box), left everything at default, and 1 in 4 of my WU's are a CEP2. There were about 1,200 Skype engineers at the time and that ticket had more than 500 comments from engineers protesting this change. The mooning icon was a symbol of playful cheekiness at Skype and has always been part of the app, and Skype never got sued for over 10 years. Remove the mooning emoji from Skype, as it could be considered offensive in some countries and thus Microsoft could be at risk of being sued.Īll of Skype erupted. A few months after Microsoft acquired Skype, a JIRA ticket was opened by one of the compliance teams at Microsoft with a simple request. I have a story that makes me relate from Microsoft/Skype. I assume this request from Apple’s side originates from on of the legal teams, who are paid to pre-emotive ensure Apple won’t be sued. That isn't how any of this works.īut it makes for a lot of crybaby stories. Some random Apple employee writing a story linked it (or a tax employee accepting a tax return, or a cop giving a pass to speeding), therefore it is officially sanctioned for all time. That getting away with it before grandfathers it in or something. Yet we see this exactly this sort of childish argument in all realms: Some guy deducts something unlawful for years and then one day the tax man says "Uh no.that isn't allowed", and they point to their prior years as if that makes it suddenly lawful. If I then at some future date pointed to that as legalizing my speeding for all time, that would be ignorant nonsense. Maybe he likes my car (or skin) color and decided to look the other way. Maybe he was confused about the speed limit on that stretch. Maybe it's an off day for him and he just doesn't care. Let me be more explicit for you, then: I speed past a cop who is pointing his radar gun at me, staring at me, but for some reason he doesn't decide to pursue me (an experience many of us have actually had). Word of mouth is easier, but sometimes a problem like this happens. Overall, Amphetamine did seem to be pushing the drug-use angle much harder than other apps in the category based on the logo, tagline and title, especially if you consider caffeine abuse not problematic.Īdded: I don't have a strong opinion on this one either way, other than edgy naming has pros and cons. The guideline in question doesn't seem to consider excessive use of caffeine as problematic to encourage. By comparison, Amphetamine seems to be the most popular result, at least for the search term "awake", with 1.37K reviews There's one other, much less popular app called "Coca" which appears to reference cocaine, but doesn't also have a drug-referencing icon or tagline, and which only has 15 reviews. The logo is basically a big pill and the tagline "Powerful keep-awake utility" which is clearly alluding to the drug. I thought I should look at the App Store and see what this app is doing in comparison to similar apps. Travel to Mexico should be considered international?) Make sure to triple check before you leave so you don’t get stranded in the wrong terminal. (Which doesn’t make a lot of sense, because, you know. Getting There That could not have been further from the truth, and in fact, I thought Cancun was the most beautiful part of Mexico I’ve ever been to! (Because it’s on the East coast, where the waters are the gorgeous Gulf of Mexico blue, vs the cold, dark Pacific ocean on the West!) (Blame it on watching too much “MTV Spring Break” in high school.) Honestly, I’ve kind of always viewed Cancun as the place where college kids go on spring break. I’ve been to Mexico several times in my younger years, but never to Cancun. (WAH!) But all good things must come to an end, right? At least the high here was in the forties–it would’ve been really cruel coming back to typical Chicago January weather! □īecause I’m still trying to hold onto our beachy vacation a little longer, I was excited to get to work on this post! The Google Cast button allows almost anything to be streamed to the Chromecast or Android TV. The Chromecast did its thing with updates and within five minutes it was ready to go. The range at which it could get a solid connection to my home Wi-Fi router was improved compared to the last version, as was stream reliability when placed on the other side of my house from the router. I couldn’t get it to connect to the Guardian’s corporate Wi-Fi network, but it worked at home just fine. The app will handle settings to get it connected to your home Wi-Fi network. Plug the Chromecast in, hook up the microUSB cable to give it power and fire up the Chromecast app on an Android, iOS smartphone or tablet. Google provides a charger and cable in the box, but almost any other USB charger will work too. The Chromecast is powered by a micro USB cable, which can be plugged into a TV’s USB port, if it has one. Compared to the previous generation Chromecast, the new one is much easier to fit into an existing setup, particularly if you have several HDMI ports quite closely packed together. The small black, pink or yellow puck measuring 5cm in diameter connects to your TV or home cinema system with a flat flexible HDMI cable measuring 10cm in length. We had this confirmed with the Harman Kardon Citation MultiBeam 1100 soundbar, both from the TV’s ARC output and with the Chromecast connected directly to the soundbar’s HDMI input. The Chromecast plugs straight into the HDMI socket on a TV or amplifier. With the new Chromecast connected, not only do we get a much more slick and responsive interface we also get Dolby Atmos out through the ARC jack on the TV. This is the Panasonic TV with My Home Screen 3.0. The TV doesn’t have to be older than 2018 for the interface to look medieval. “ You wouldn’t exactly call it modern,” Audun says, pointing out the obvious. We haven’t yet seen support for any apps disappear, but the manoeuvring is sluggish, the layout is old-fashioned and none of the apps support Dolby Atmos. The problem is the TV’s rather outdated smart interface in the form of My Home Screen 3.0. The picture quality was impressive for the price range back then, and it still provides a good TV picture, even if it’s not the brightest kind for HDR content. In the lobby we have a Panasonic TV from 2018, which shows news and other content of interest to the L&B Tech Reviews staff on a daily basis. (Photo: Google) Testing with an ageing Panasonic TV The remote is much faster than those for most TVs, but is still a bit behind Apple TV’s. Where Apple allows you to use your phone to enter passwords or even share logins directly from your phone, Chromecast requires you to use the arrow keys on the remote to type usernames and passwords on a virtual keyboard. What we miss compared to Apple TV 4K is easier first-time login in apps. (Photo: Geir Gråbein Nordby) Somewhat cumbersome login Finally, we can get Dolby Atmos out of our 2018 Panasonic TV. And since it also has Bluetooth connectivity for external audio, you can avoid long cable runs from the projector to a sound system. If you have a good quality 4K TV or projector, you’ll get the full benefit of Chromecast. The picture quality is equally uncompromising, and as the Chromecast supports both 4K, HDR and Dolby Vision, you can get movies and series in optimal quality. We note that clicking around with the remote is much quicker than on, say, my own Sony OLED TV, the A90J. If you like you can voice control the device with a button on the remote or use the arrow keys. But it has been unavailable on the market for some time. Until now, Chromecast Ultra has been Google’s only product to offer 4K resolution and HDR, and also support the Dolby Atmos audio format. Most people know Chromecast as a nifty little gadget that lets you open a streaming app on your phone and send audio and video to your TV over the wireless network by clicking an icon in the corner of your mobile screen. (Photo: Geir Gråbein Nordby) With or without remote control – that’s where the question has been The latest Chromecast with Google TV has a remote control. The most well-known and popular are Apple TV and Google Chromecast. Fortunately, there are affordable solutions that mean you don’t have to buy a new TV. There are many old TVs out there where the picture quality still holds up, but the smart TV services are either absent or outdated. But what happens when your new TV isn’t so new anymore? The latest TVs have apps and features galore. TV manufacturers are competing to have the best smart TV service. Worst of all, you could put your clients at risk.ĭon’t take the sanitation part of the spring cleaning checklist lightly-that’s all we’ll say about that. If you don’t meet the codes or regulations, you can put yourself at risk of fines, lawsuits, and damage to your reputation. This stuff is an absolute must because sanitizing your salon is government-sanctioned. Remember, this isn’t just friendly advice that you could follow. So, if you’re not quite there, check out our article here to help get you on the right track. You should always be up-to-snuff on the industry standards for sanitizing your salon. While you should be sanitizing all of your tools and surfaces after every use and client (tweezers, clippers, combs, brushes, etc.), we absolutely suggest doing a deep sanitize of every item and surface in your salon to really get your spring cleaning on. When you sanitize, though, you’re disinfecting, cleansing, and sanitizing, so you’re checking every type of “cleaning” off the list. Cleansing something is more of a soap-and-water take on cleaning. When you disinfect, you’re using antibacterial substances to destroy those microbes and fungi we talked earlier-disinfectants typically include things like barbicide, bleach, alcohol, peroxide, etc. They make us sick, they wreck immune systems, and they can even be fatal.Īn important thing to note here is that sanitizing is different than cleansing and disinfecting. These gross little fellas are microscopic and exist everywhere around us. We could explain this with a ton of words, but instead, we’ll just give you five: microbes, yeast, viruses, fungi, bacteria. Why is sanitizing your salon and your tools and literally everything you regularly touch a must? Obviously, you should have sanitation on lock at all times, but if you’re spring cleaning, now’s the time to truly get down with the dirty and sanitize your little heart away. We said it three times for a reason-because we mean it. Sanitize, Sanitize, Sanitize (Then Clean & Disinfect) Hopefully, this little salon guideline will help take you from a cleaning-is-a-total-drag attitude to a let’s-hear-it-for-spring-cleaning level of enthusiasm in no time! (And if it doesn’t, well, we can only make cleaning sound so fun, okay?) A point-by-point of the must-know tips when it comes to really giving your salon, spa, or shop a proper Spring spruce. Meet our Salon Spring Cleaning Checklist. If you’re not all about a super deep, super satisfying, and super-intensive cleansing of your beloved salon, shop, or spa, or if you feel overwhelmed just thinking about where to start on your own spring cleaning journey, we’ve gone ahead and made it just a touch easier for you this year. That’s right, everyone, it’s not just spring, it’s spring cleaning and at EBS, we can’t tell you how excited we are the time has finally come. How we can tell? Well, if it’s not the fresh air, flowers, and spring showers-it’s the delightfully refreshing scent of all those sanitizing, disinfecting, and cleaning chemicals that really gave it away.
